Picture Information: A detail from a bronze age fresco uncovered in 1967 at Akrotiri on the Aegean island of Santorini. Santorini was classically known as Thera and is the best known Minoan site outside of Crete. The fresco shows Minoan youths boxing and contains the earliest artistic representation of boxing gloves. The fresco dates from around 1700 BCE and was preserved under many metres of volcanic ash from an eruption that happened most likely sometime in the 1600’s BCE.
